Erlund Log House

Wood:

Warm, natural and renewable - wood is the natural choice for a healthy ecological home.

Since 1978 we have specialised in manufacturing and exporting prefabricated log houses made of round and square logs and since 1994 log houses manufactured with our unique patented wall system the most advanced log house constructions method in Europe.

Traditional and still new:

In 1994 we developed a new thermally more efficient but still natural log wall structure. Which although remaining faithful to log house building traditions in Finland was able, unlike our traditional log houses, to meet the stricter thermal insulation regulations demanded in Germany our biggest exporting country.

Unique to Erlund House is our patented wall structure which consists of a tight double tongue and groove log wall, the bearing structure of the house, protected by an external panelled wall made from heart sawn 28 mm thick spruce panels. Between them is blown ekovilla insulation - natural cellulose fibre insulation, made from recycled paper creating a totally natural breathable log wall structure with excellent thermal insulation values.

Stricter insulation regulations:

To improve the U-values of a log house to meet stricter building regulations it became necessary to increase the thickness of the logs, but a thicker log is more prone to split, crack or twist causing drafts and thermal leaking points. Although a laminated log is less prone to splitting and cracking the glue used in laminating the log acts as a moisture barrier preventing the wood breathing which can cause rot damage to the inside of the log.

It is possible to construct with a smaller log and insulate and panel the inside of a log house but this still exposes the logs the bearing structure of the house to harmful weathering and because the external walls are exposed to different moisture and temperature conditions than the internal partition walls this can cause uneven settling of the log structure.

Ekovilla is a cellulose fibre insulation that does not burn. It is made of recycled paper - does not itch nor is harmful to humans and it is blown into the wall cavity on site.

Ekovilla contains boron compounds which effectively stops rot and fungus.

It also breathes so a vapour barrier is not needed.

Ekovilla protects against fire - it just carbonises and
cools down the heat.

Calculations of Ekovilla:

It has got a very good and economic lambda-value.
The best loose insulation lambda-values
- in Finland 0,041 W/m C°
- in Germany 0,040 W/m C°
- in Sweden 0,039 W/m C°

Ekovilla also has good acoustic insulation properties

From Experience:

Our house is warm in winter and only needs very little heating to maintain a comfortable living environment, due to its extremely efficient cavity insulation and standard, triple glazed windows. Condensation and humidity are a thing of the past.

In summer, the same insulation offers protection from the summer sun to achieve a cooler and more comfortable interior.
